If you’re looking for somewhere for Friday night knock offs, or just want to get the night started a little bit earlier then you need to get acquainted with Bistro Blackwood.

Their new digs on Rundle Street are the place to be on Friday and Saturday afternoons, with their Apero Hour being the perfect way to ease into the weekend.

Bistro Blackwood is a stunning restaurant with a retro feel, decorated with hints of brass, navy, leather and timber. The interior flows out naturally onto the alfresco, where you can enjoy your meal and drinks in comfort, even in the Adelaide’s crazy weather (hello heat strips above your head keeping you oh-so-cosy!).

We were invited to their new Apero Hour and it was an absolute treat. Apero hour kicks off at 4pm and runs until 6pm, offering a variety of drinks and bar style snacks with a difference. As soon as we saw Chef Jock Zonfrillo is in the kitchen, we knew we were in for quite the treat.

We kicked things off with an Apero Spitz with a twist- you got me at Adelaide Hills sparkling rose and blood oranges. If Aperol isn’t your thing, then you’ll be excited to see several South Australian wines on the menu, as well as a Coopers Sparkling, for those who like a brew.

In terms of food we were treated to three of their smaller dishes- Fire Pit Roasted Red Capsicum dip with sherry vinegar and herb flowers, freshly shucked Coffin Bay oysters with milk habanero and lemon and Shoestring Fries.

Oyster lovers will fall head over heels for these bad boys, offering a little bit of a kick and a whole lot of freshness. I’m not an oyster lover myself, but my foodie friend is, and those 6 delicious morsels went down a treat.

I am however a fries lover, and couldn’t rate the shoestring’s high enough. They tasted just like salt and vinegar chips and were so moreish. I would buy them by the bagful if I could.

The dip was just as tasty and you could really taste a smokiness to the capsicum. Alongside the capsicum dip we were treated to freshly baked bread by Roy from Soii Boy- a ridiculously good baker who has taken part in a rather spekky Renew Adelaide project.

If you are looking for after work drinks with a difference and some damn good fare, pop into Apero Hour at Bistro Blackwood. If you’re feeling peckish after the hour, book a table and carry on until dinner. I was eyeing off their Fire Pit Squid and Australian Jerk Pork Belly- oh yes!

You can find Bistro Blackwood at 285 Rundle Street, Adelaide.
