Find yourself in the CBD in Adelaide but dreaming of the vineyards in the Fleurieu Peninsula?
Then you need to get yourself to McLaren Vale Winemakers newest residence on Gilbert Street, Five O’clock Somewhere.
A venture by Mclaren Vale Winemakers head honcho Steve Grimley, Five Oclock Somewhere is a cellar door come bottle shop, stocking boutique wines by the passionate team at Mclaren Vale Winemakers. Once a office building used as a home and away from home, now turned into a place that Adelaide’s West End residents call their local. In this cellar door will find yourself spoilt with choice with wines, with ample reds and whites to keep you busy, as well as a coffee machine on site dishing up perfect brews using locally roasted Villere Coffee. It’s the perfect place to stop in for an afternoon wine, an after work tipple or the perfect stop for sneaky catch up with friends or solo freelance- with wifi available inside.
The interior is far different from the other bottle shops in the city- its walls are lined with recycled timber boxes and there’s chalkboard-look walls covered with typography by Melbournite Tristan Kerr. It’s an intimate space with leather tub chairs that you can cosy on into, bar stools and furniture made by Kindling scattered around the shop, as well as a impressive bar and secret room- a new addition waiting to be opened that houses the possibility of a pizza oven and local produce fresh from the Fleurieu.
Five O’clock Somewhere has represented the Fleurieu perfectly here in the city, with the store having an organic vibe and inviting feel. Those who work the floor are mostly winemakers which gives you the rare opportunity to speak to those behind the wine- the perfect time to pick their brains, share an espresso and even taste their own vinos. They also make a mean latte if it’s a little early in the day- but wine is made from grapes, and grapes can be eaten any time right?
When it comes to wine you will no doubt find it hard to choose just one bottle, with them being marked at a reasonable price point (a good excuse to buy a few bottles right?) There is a variety to choose from, as well as the choice of Five Oclock Somewhere’s ‘home brand’ as they like to call it- but don’t worry, there’s no black and gold stodgy labels here. It’s actually quite the opposite- some of the labeling for these babies are done by local artists and will have you wanting to frame them on your walls.
If wine isn’t your thing (and I’m not here to judge) then you will also be looked after. Fleurieu made Sunshine Iceblocks sit proudly by the door, perfect for the health conscious and kids at heart (the chocolate and avocado + strawberries and cream are a must).
So whether you’re after a bottle on the run or want to sample some of the finest wines from the Vale look no further than Five O’clock Somewhere- you’ll find it difficult to not indulge in a tasting or two.
You can find Five O’clock Somewhere at 101 Gilbert Street, Adelaide, Open every day 11-7pm.
