Strong coffee. Impressive platters. Equally as impressive wine.
Sounds like you’ve found Harrys Deli.
It’s my new go to in Mclaren Vale. Nested away next to the Wirra Wirra Cellar Door, Harry’s Deli is a cafe, delicatessen and long lunch space rolled into one. The interior is a firm favourite- plenty of timber, exposed brick, marble and large glass windows that look out to a lush lawns and vineyards. There’s plenty of room for families, cosy seats for those travelling solo and a long communal table where you can graze the afternoon away. When the weather is good you can sit outside and soak up the rays- or better yet grab a picnic blanket and hit the grass and let the kids run wild.
Since its at a winery, you can expect that you will be looked after in terms of reds, whites and bubbles. Wirra Wirra have all their usuals on the menu, as well as Swell Beers and Ginscato’s (Gin and Moscato, my new obsession). Designated drivers will also be stoked to see Dawn Patrol Coffee coming out of the machines, with the winery using their own Church Block blend. Luke, head coffee honcho, also makes a mean chai- so mean that I would regularly drive half an hour to get one. Now tha’ts a good chai.
To go with their epic drinks list is a delicious and long food menu, boasting local suppliers from the Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide. I’m talking about Clappis Bread, Four Winds Chocolates, Say Cheese cheeses and Spice Girlz relishes. YUM. I’m slowly eating my way through the menu and on every occasion my stomach has been more than happy. My favourites so far are the spiced chicken panini, ‘The Lot’ Harrys Deli platter, ‘From the neighbourhood’ cheese plate and the homemade pies.
The platters are definitely not for the faint hearted- their platter game is strong. International and local cheeses take centre stage, as well as Little Acre Foods duck pate, Brians olives, Clappis sourdough, cured meats and plenty of condiments to slather on top. I’m drooling just thinking of them. It would easily feed three, as would the local cheese platter.
One more thing you can expect from this place- lovely and attentive staff. Whether its at the cafe or the cellar door, these guys (and girls) always look after us- no matter how busy it gets. If you’re in the Vale, or are looking to head south for the afternoon, then pop this in your GPS.
You can find Harry’s Deli at Wirra Wirra at 255 Strout Road, Mclaren Vale.
