If you love a winery oozing rustic charm, with endless views of vineyards and one hell of a tasting list, then I’ve got the place for you.
Mt Jagged Wines
Situated in Mt Jagged, between Victor Harbor and Mount Compass (about 20 minutes south of McLaren Vale), this cellar door is quaint and picture perfect. I’ve driven past here 100 times and have been meaning to stop, and I’m so glad we did.
The tasting room itself is perched on top of a hill, surrounded by rows of vineyards where chickens and kangaroos roam free. Inside is super cosy and has a very laid-back feel. Think mismatched furniture, comfortable lounges and eclectic goodies dotted around- but it all ties in together and just works. In the cooler months you’ll find the woodfire roaring and takes pride of place- you might just have to fight someone for the arm chairs next to it.
This winery is also very kid friendly, with books, toys and games so they can be entertained while you have some winey times. Outside there’s also massive lawns, so perfect for the kids to burn off all that energy and get some fresh air when the weather is warm.
In terms of wine you can expect both whites and reds, with 9 to taste in total. Their ‘Honey Myrtle’ Chardonnay came highly recommended, recently taking out the Bronze medal in the 2018 James Halliday companion.
The other half however loved their reds, with the 2017 Pink Heath Sparking Pinot Noir and NV Sparkling Red being the two standouts. The wines here won’t break the bank either, with each bottle costing no more than $20.00, and wines by the glass at a steal of $6.00. If you’re deso for the day they also have you covered with coffee, tea and hot choccies also on hand- the hot chocolate is delicious.
We were lucky enough to find a Scoopon deal for Mt Jagged, so on this visit we were also treated to a huge Fleurieu Tasting Platter. For $42.00 (normal cellar door price) we got a platter filled to the brim with amazing local produce. They aim to obtain all their products within 25kms of the cellar door, so you can expect to see some delicious producers on the platters. Some of my favourites such as Little Acre Foods, Woodside Cheese Wrights, Big Sissy Foods, artisan bread by Andy Clappis and Fleurieu Prime Alpaca take pride of place on their platters, so you know you are in for a treat.
If you are looking for something more substantial then opt for their Lunch Platter at $50.00 or for those who love getting cheesy, get your hands on their Cheese Board at $30.00- they really have everyone covered! In the cooler months they will be introducing soups along-side their hot drinks and wine, making it the perfect place to bunker down on a winters day.
This winery is definitely one not to be missed- the staff were lovely and the food and wine was divine. We will certainly be back!
