Pipi

Headed South for the day and feeling a bit peckish? Well I’ve got somewhere for you.

Let me introduce you to Pipi.

A little café turned oasis on the main road of Middleton, Pipi is a brunch lover’s heaven and a little slice of paradise. Hidden behind succulents, palm streets and greenery, it’s a blink and you’ll miss it kinda place- just the swarms of locals and a baby blue sandwich board give it away.

Inside is quiet and warm. It fits in perfectly with its surrounds, with a coastal feel and plenty of white wash, timbers and natural tones throughout. Although it may be small they have plenty of seating- there’s a courtyard as well as a few picnic benches out the front- perfect when the sun is out.

But to the serious side of things now- the food. Pipi has a strong focus local, seasonal fare and supporting local artisans. Their menu is bursting with variety, and uses some of the best producers the region has to offer. Scoop SA and Willunga Pasta from the Fleurieu Peninsula are a few standouts, as well as Pipi’s from the Goolwa Pipi Co and free-range eggs from Feather and Peck.

I’m currently on a mission to eat my way through their menu, but let me tell you, it’s a struggle. A focus on eating seasonal means menu changes and there’s always such good specials. I’ve fallen in love with their Peach and Basil pancake special, and let’s face it, I long for its return. Their Pipi Hash (a mash up of eggs, chorizo and potatoes) was also a firm favourite.

Their 2019 Summer Menu takes all the food blues away though, as there are some seriously good brunch and lunch options. If you’re after something light, then say hello to their Nectarine and Banana bread, Fruit Toast or Toasted Muesli.

If you are keen for something a bit more substantial, then they have ALL of the choices. Brioche French Toast, Smash Avo (always), Pumpkin Burgers, Corn Fritters and even a big ol bowl of SA Mussels and Goolwa Pipis.

We opted for the Shakshuka and the Cheeseburger. The other half LOVED his Shak- it was loaded with slow cooked lamb, capsicum and feta and had the most tastiest, slightly spicy sauce. It was quickly devoured with the bread used to mop up the juices- not a spoonful was left.

My cheeseburger was equally as delicious- it was so massive I had to eat it deconstructed. I am also a messy eater so that was another contributing factor. The patty was big and juicy, there was plenty of cheese and the mustard had a nice tang. I was a little sad to see no fries on the side, but I couldn’t even finish the burger so in the end I was glad it didn’t.

On every occasion we have ordered coffee, and it is consistently SO GOOD. They use De Groot Coffee, roasted less than 5kms away, so you know you are in for a treat. I’m a picky decaf drinker at present, and they are nailing it.

They also serve some other delicious non-coffee beverages- Tea from Scullery Made in the Barossa, Organic Sodas from Strangelove, Milkshakes and some pretty awesome smoothies- banana with KI money and Fleurieu yoghurt. Yes thanks! If you’re wanting a tipple or two, there’s plenty of local beer and wine on the menu- i’ll cheers to that.

If you are in Middleton and you’re looking to fill your belly with some damn good food and just general lovely feelings then pop into Pipi. They will have you rolling walking out the door.

You can find Pipi at 25 Goolwa Road, Middleton.
